Proud History and an Exciting Future

The Algonquin Nation loved this area long before any European settlers arrived. The logging industry was an essential part of the economy in the early days. With improved rail and road facilities, the industry continued to gain importance.  James Barry built a logging camp on the shores of  Kamaniskeg Lake. After that, it was called Barry’s camp on the bay, which became known as Barry’s Bay. By the late 1850s, the authorities of Upper Canada looked to expand colonization in this Region by building the Opeongo Line, a series of roads extending westward from Renfrew. In 1860 the first settlers arrived from Ireland and Poland to build these roads.

The Polish settlers played a crucial role in the development of the area. Barry’s Bay is a centre of Kashubian culture in Canada. Kashubians are a West-Slavic ethnic group from north-central Poland. Also, there is a Karol Wojtyla Square in Barry’s Bay. They have always been a vital element of the community. Their importance and contribution are still evident today. In the 19th century, the logging industry cut the large white pine and red pine trees to produce lumber for Canadian, American and UK markets. Small numbers of homesteaders and farmers followed the loggers.  The Opeongo railway line was completed in 1863-64. The historic former railway station still stands and is now a tourist information office at 19503 Opeongo Line.

In 1879 the first hotel was built by James Drohan. It was located on the corner of what is now Highway 60 and 62.  In 1893 the first general store opened in Barry’s Bay. The village of Barry’s Bay was incorporated in 1933. In World War II, men and women from the area joined the Canadian War effort.

Historical Sites

Southwest of Barry’s Bay, at the intersection of Siberia and Kartney Roads, you will find gravestones of the first Polish settlers.  Water Tower Park features an outdoor museum of railway and farm artifacts. The water tower is one of only two free-standing wooden railway water towers remaining in Ontario. The historic train station is also home to the South of 60 Arts’ Centre, host to various arts and craft shows, musical events and festivals.

The community dedicated a park and monument to honour the construction of the Canadian Avro CF-105 Arrow and its chief test pilot, local resident Janusz Żurakowski. The CF-105 was an advanced Canadian designed-and-built interceptor that was instrumental in advancing aviation technology in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
